Belo Horizonte, Brazil. 1980

My wife and I, with other missionary friends, would often go in the streets passing out salvation tracks. We would usually go to places where many young people hung out and many times it was hard to evangelize to them as they were either drunk or high on drugs. We did discover though, that if one of them stopped and wanted to know more about Jesus, and if they would let us pray for them, that their high would dissipate and they would be in their sane minds again. At least a half dozen times I witnessed the power of the Holy Spirit working on a person when a half dozen of us would put our hands on them and pray. We would ask them to repeat the “sinner’s prayer”. There is something real about that name of Jesus that calms one’s spirit, that relieves one from one’s old selfish dark world. At that time we became accustomed to witnessing drug and alcohol abusers forsake their enslaving habits. Despite seeing the power of the Holy Spirit, it was usually only one out of a hundred that would respond. Jesus mentioned how the good shepherd went out to save the one lost sheep. So, amongst those you know who try to escape reality (which they never do, it is all a dystopian temporary expensive stimulation) keep on trying! The one that responds will thank you and love you forever (literally!) and you will have accomplished the mission of freeing a soul into the kingdom of God!
