Bogota, Colombia 1988

Regina was out one day in the city of Bogota with our daughter Rebeca, and she was waiting for the next bus home. Amongst the crowd of 30 or more people were a few teenagers and young boys, a typical bus stop scenario. Then one of the teenage boys with a few other boys about 10 years old came beside Rebeca and Regina and said,  Give me you rings and watch or I’ll cut you with my knife”! Regina was shocked having never been in that situation so she took off her watch and rings but the wedding ring was stubbornly stuck on. The boy of the street, known as a “gamine”, (an aggressive homeless child known to be abundant in Bogota) was getting impatient. The ring finally came off so after 10 years of having that precious gold item, her wedding ring was gone! The other ring had a diamond, it was a gift from my mother to her. She felt devastated, was shaken, and sad to know that even children can be criminals and threaten to harm you. No one nearby watching helped her, how disappointing. When she got home I told her not to worry, that God would supply another wedding ring and that we just needed to thank God that nothing worse happened! It was a hard lesson that we decided she would not go out alone in the city and both of us learned to be hyper-vigilant of people who are standing nearby us. I was never robbed in this manner but that is Satan’s demons for you, the choose those who are weak to attack. Jesus said, “Watch and pray”. It is our part to “watch” as God does want to protect us, but we must do our part to be wise in all situations.
