In predominantly Catholic Bolivia, there use to be a good tradition of the commemoration of Holy Week. People carried palm leaves to church for Palm Sunday and worshiped with them. All week-long many shops stayed closed, and the focus was spirituality, not the material. Anyone in town could watch movies in the theaters with your extra time off from work, “The Robe”, “Ben Hur”, and most of all “Jesus of Nazareth”, were popular. Regina and I would try to see some of them. On Good Friday no market sold meat, only fish and the people would remain serious remembering it was the day of Jesus death. Regina and I would have more quiet time that week, and it was a wonderful time out to re-read what the Holy Scriptures communicated about Jesus arrest, crucifixion, and resurrection! It would be wonderful if more communities around the world would have a unified goal of slowing down all business to respect the Christian tradition of Holy Week. Jesus’ love for each of us and His resurrection deserves our total gratitude and lives of service!
