Santa Cruz, Bolivia   1980

In Bolivia people love to get together on the weekends and chat, eat, and just be together and sometimes business deals can happen through the conversations. On one occasion, Osmin, kept saying to me, it is so good to meet you “primo” (a cousin, but a slang for a good friend) and you and I can make lots of money. I had no clue what he was talking about!  He kept slapping his leg and repeating, “Yep, we can be rich!” Finally, I asked him, so, what is your plan, I don’t get it? He slapped his leg again and smiled. Then he said, “Can’t you tell, I have an artificial leg and it is hollow inside. I bet we can get 2 kilos of cocaine in it and all you have to do is come with me to translate as we go to the US!” My premise for being in Bolivia was to preach Jesus, so I was not interested in doing anything criminal! I told him, “That’s not a good idea as they will catch you”! He was rebellious and confident, “No, they won’t! You cannot even tell I have an artificial leg under these Levi jeans!” I told him, “I am sorry primo, find someone else to be your ‘mule’, I know the Lord would not be pleased if I did that and for sure He would let me get caught to teach me a lesson to not give over to the temptation of easy money!” Osmin then got very upset! That was not the only offer I got there, several times other bad offers came to me. Satan comes to us over and over to temp us, to get us to “fall”, so we will be refrained and defeated from doing God’s work. Always be aware, not all ‘friends’ have good intentions, and resisting temptation, like to gain easy money when you are poor, will keep you free from prison, blessed, and protected by the Lord.
