São Paulo, Brazil 1979

In the mega-metropolis cities in Brazil, one must often take 2 or 3 buses to get to your destination. It is easy to get very lost surrounded by people shoulder to shoulder, and before “google maps” one had to depend upon the instructions of those at the bus stop for help. Understanding about half of the Portugues language, I often got instructions like this, “go to the end of the world in bus 43, get off, walk left until the big church, then the big palm tree will mark the place you’re looking for”?! It was a miracle Regina and I never got too lost! We felt very disoriented and desperate at times. One time, at a bus stop, with our deaf infant son by our side in a stroller, we were asking several people directions, and no one knew how to tell us how to get to where we needed to go. Then a young deaf man came up to us and was signing, but we did not know sign language then, so he pulled out a pen and paper and wrote, ‘Where are you trying to go?” We wrote down our answer back and then he wrote down exactly which buses to take and how to get there! Regina and I were awestruck! He knew more than the dozens people we asked before and his directions were very clear. After that we even thought we had been guided by an angel! Most of all that gave us great inspiration to see how despite his deafness, he was very intelligent and could communicate perfectly. We were in Sao Paulo to do tests to see if our son could get a surgery, or something, to repair his hearing problem but he had nerve damage in the cochlea, so nothing could be done. Many days later we reflected on how well that young deaf man had helped us, and we believe the Lord connected us to him to catch the vision that one day our deaf son would also be a guide for many. And it happened! Paul Lion has done Bible classes and helped many thousands in the deaf community to learn about Jesus, the end times, false doctrines, and more with online videos signing. These are very difficult subjects, and we are amazed at his intelligence and influence. Pray for Paul because he is always faced with many challenges but he keeps on in the fight to win souls to the Lord, to keep good health, and to be a faithful father and productive in the community.
